SAMSUNG Design Prize by iF
Four visionary student concepts aimed at solving the United Nations' SDGs received the young talent award SAMSUNG Design Prize 2022 by iF.
Emoticons in Braille, an educational toy to teach computer algorithms, a cooling system for subway stations, and a device that attracts locusts and turns them into fertilizer – these are all concepts from students that pay towards solving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals – and have been awarded with the SAMSUNG Design Prize 2022 by iF .
The SAMSUNG Design Prize 2022 by iF is a special prize, awarded as part of the iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD 2022 . This young talent award is one of the world's most important and significant design competitions for young designers around the world. Samsung is strongly involved in promoting young design talent – and has been associated with the iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD for 15 years.
Hyuntaik Lim, Leader of the Product Design Group for Samsung Design Europe in London: "Representing more than 1,500 designers working for Samsung worldwide, it is a special honor for me to award young, talented designers with the SAMSUNG Design Prize 2022. Based on Samsung's design philosophy of "Inspired by Humans, creating the future," the Samsung design team is constantly striving to create a better life for all customers.
Therefore, for a sustainable future, designers should always focus on ethical values for the environment, society, economy and the overall benefit of humanity. This makes it all the more important to give young designers around the world the opportunity to think about the Sustainable Development Goals agreed upon by countries under the UN, to find problems and solve them through design. So, I hope designers will always remain those who think about the SDGs and continue to pay attention to the meaningful steps of the iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD."

Farmland Guardian | Agricultural Equipment

Farmland Guardian is a piece of agricultural equipment that attracts locusts and converts them into fertilizer.
Jury Statement: "This project identifies a serious problem, and imaginatively suggests turning the problem into a solution. Although this device is currently designed for manual operation, it has potential to be powered by solar energy.“
Terracotta Valley Wind | Passive Cooling System for Public Space
Designed by Chenkai Guo , Baohua Sheng , Yilei Lyu , Yu Zhang (Tama Art University, Tokyo / Japan)
This evaporative cooling system is designed to cool subway stations during summer and reduce energy consumption.
Jury Statement: „This project encourages emerging young talents to address the crucial issue of energy resource management though the development of new technologies and intelligent materials.”
Acorny, a toy kit that supports computational thinking | Product & Application Design
Designed by Jaeyoung Myung (Yonsei University, Seoul / Republic of Korea), Soyoung Lee (University of Southern California, Los Angeles / United States of America)
Acorny is an educational product designed to teach the principles underlying computer algorithms.
Jury Statement: "This project introduces children to computational skills in an intuitive way. By using the motif of processing flow, beginners intuitively understand computational concepts. It’s an ideal tool to introduce young children to coding."
Braille Meets Emoticons – bridge to visual language | Book - Emoticons for the visually impaired
Designed by Walda Verbaenen (PXL MAD School of Arts, MAD research, Hasselt University / Belgium)
People who use the Braille language are forced to use the 26-letter alphabet to describe their emotions. In this typographical experiment, 22 of the most commonly used emoticons are converted into a new 9-dot Braille grid. It tries to build a bridge to visual language for the visually impaired.
Jury Statement: "Emojis can be inaccessible to the visually impaired. The proposed solution elegantly addresses this challenge and fits very well into the existing braille context. The design is nicely presented and feasible."
Valencia - the World Design Capital 2022
The World Design Capital 2022 Valencia, the Spanish design hotspot on the Mediterranean Sea, provided the unique setting for the awards ceremony on 16 June 2022 . In addition to the official honoring of the award winners on the big stage in the architecturally imposing Oceanografic , the award winners were able to participate in the complete program, the first signature event, EXPERIENCE VALENCIA 22 (13-18 June 2022).
The iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD
The iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD honors exciting, visionary ideas and concepts from students that enable a dignified life worldwide while preserving the natural foundations of life. The competition categories correspond to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals . The competition has been held since 2002 . Participation in the competition is free of charge – prize money totaling EUR 50,000 is awarded each year.
